David is a Contributing Writer at Bloomberg, cohost of the podcast Look Both Ways, and author of the free newsletter Paved with Good Intentions. He is also writing a book on congestion pricing for MIT Press. He was a Senior Fellow at the MIT Mobility Initiative, and before that he held leadership roles in city government in New York City and Washington, DC.

David coined the term “car bloat” to describe the steady growth of SUVs and pickups on our roads. He has also made the case for requiring intelligent speed assistance, pointed out that the U.S. has no pedestrian impact standards for cars, and taken a skeptical look at what robotaxis will mean for safety and congestion. These are the issues at the center of our Safe Vehicles work, including our Stop Super Speeders campaign. He’ll engage in a conversation with us about why our vehicles have become so dangerous, what it will take to change them, and how our voices as crash survivors and families can move the needle.
