Latanya’s Legacy

We are heartbroken to share the passing of Latanya Byrd, a true force for justice and road safety in Philadelphia and beyond. Latanya turned unimaginable grief into tireless advocacy after losing her niece Samara Banks and three of Samara’s children to a crash on Roosevelt Boulevard in 2013.

Rather than letting tragedy define her, Latanya channeled her pain into purpose — leading to real, life-saving change. Her voice was instrumental in the installation of speed cameras on Roosevelt Boulevard, one of the deadliest roads in the country. Thanks to her leadership, those cameras have reduced speeding and saved lives. Additionally, she helped secure  $134 million via Philadelphia’s Route for Change project funding to help fix Roosevelt Boulevard.

Latanya didn’t stop at city limits. She brought the stories of Philadelphia families to the national stage, speaking at the White House Equity Summit and meeting with top officials to make sure no more families would suffer as hers did.

As a leader on our National Executive Committee, we honor her presence and passion that inspired many of us when the going got tough. Her leadership as co-chair of the FSS Greater Philadelphia chapter and other local organizations will forever be treasured as a guidepost to what is possible. Beyond what Latanya did for others, she was a phenomenal woman all around.

She was a legend. A mentor. A change-maker. And above all, she was love in action.

Latanya, we will carry your mission forward. Your voice, your fight, and your spirit live on in all of us.

📍 Every safe street bears your name.

📍 Every slowed driver is part of your legacy.

📍 Every life saved is because of your courage.

Rest in power, Latanya Byrd.

We will never forget you.
