Crash Victims & Survivors Renew Push to Stop Super Speeders at the Nation’s First-Statewide Implementation of Super Speeder Law

Families for Safe Streets and partners for an ISA Tech Demonstration & press conference ahead of the launch of Virginia's new automated speed enforcement program on July 1. Media are encouraged to RSVP by June 29 to reserve a multi-feed channel and sign up for a ride-along.

ARLINGTON, VA — On July 1, Virginia will become the first state in the nation to implement a Stop Super Speeders program, empowering judges to order repeat and extreme speeding offenders to install Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology that prevents a vehicle from exceeding the speed limit.

To mark this milestone, transportation safety leaders, lawmakers, victims' families, and technology experts will gather on June 30th to highlight Virginia's first-in-the-nation statewide rollout of a Stop Super Speeders program. The event is part of Families for Safe Streets' Stop Super Speeders national campaign, a growing effort to educate the public, lawmakers, and policymakers about the dangers of extreme speeding and the proven tools available to prevent it. The event will feature a live demonstration of ISA technology and underscore the growing momentum behind Stop Super Speeders laws nationwide.

WHAT: A news conference and live technology demonstration marking Virginia's super speeder law taking effect, and the launch of a national public-education campaign.

WHO:

  • Jessica Hart — Families for Safe Streets

  • Board Member Tom Chapman—National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)

  • Sen. Jeff Waldstreicher— Maryland State Senator and sponsor of the 2026 Stop Super Speeders law

  • Judge Michael Cassidy (Ret.) — Virginia State Judicial Outreach Liaison (an NHTSA/ABA Judicial Division role), who educates judges on highway-safety technology including ISA

WHEN: Tuesday, June 30, 2026, 10:00 a.m. ET (Formal program approximately 30–40 minutes; ISA vehicle demonstrations and media ride-alongs to follow.)

WHERE: Plaza outside Ellen M. Bozman Government Center, 2100 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington, VA  (Press audio mult feed provided.)

VISUALS / B-ROLL:

  • Ride-alongs in ISA-equipped vehicles — the device is about the size of a deck of cards — showing how it works to prevent a car from exceeding the limit

  • Interview availability with all speakers and with ISA experts

WHY IT MATTERS: Speeding-related deaths surged roughly 30% after COVID and remain unacceptably high — over 11,000 a year, nearly a third of all U.S. road deaths. This campaign's premise is that this is a solvable cultural problem, and that America has solved one like it before: the same two-tool approach that drove down drunk driving — public education paired with proven technology — must be applied to extreme speeding today.

The movement is accelerating. Three years ago, there were no laws targeting super speeders with ISA. Today, eight states and the District of Columbia have Stop Super Speeders laws on the books: the District of Columbia, Virginia, Washington State, Maryland, Illinois, New York, Georgia, Hawaii, and Arizona. Virginia is the first state to reach implementation, and the June 30 campaign launch aims to carry that momentum into statehouses across the country.
