Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets Statements after Stop Super Speeders Passed in Final State Budget

In New York, the Stop Super Speeders bill passed in the state budget, all thanks to advocates like you!

The Stop Super Speeders bill will require speed-limiter devices on vehicles that receive 16+ speeding tickets in one year.

Vehicles with 16+ speeding violations are twice as likely to be involved in a crash that leads to a fatality or serious injury.

ALBANY, NY — Last night, the Stop Super Speeders bill was passed as a part of this year’s New York State budget package. The bill will empower New York City to establish a program requiring speed-limiter devices on vehicles that receive 16+ speeding tickets in a single year.

Traditional enforcement mechanisms aren’t enough; up to 75% of drivers with a suspended license drive anyway. Speed limiters are a highly effective way to slow down reckless drivers — a pilot of the devices on City fleet vehicles saw a 64% reduction in speeding.

Joint Statement from Darnell Sealy-McCrorey and Amber Adler, members of Families for Safe Streets:

“We can tell you firsthand: speeding kills. As a father who lost his daughter to a speeding driver and a mother who was in a traffic crash with her sons, we feel incredible relief that this bill will become law. We know this bill will protect children in all five boroughs.

“We are grateful to every single member of Families for Safe Streets for their tireless advocacy, as well as our partners in government. Together we will continue the fight for safe streets, so no New Yorker has to know our unimaginable pain.”

Statement from Ben Furnas, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives:

“Today marks a monumental change in the history of New York City: no longer will we ignore the threat posed by our city’s most reckless drivers. Finally, we will slow down the drivers who have been repeatedly terrorizing our neighborhoods.

“We want to thank every elected official who stood with us in this fight, including bill sponsors State Senator Gounardes and Assemblymember Gallagher, Assembly Speaker Heastie, Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, Governor Hochul, Mayor Mamdani, and a bipartisan supermajority of the City Council, including Speaker Menin and Majority Leader and Transportation Chair Abreu. We wouldn’t be here without your support. Of course, this moment would not have been possible without the tireless advocacy of members of Families for Safe Streets and countless others. Thank you for your unending commitment to street safety.

“Today is only possible because of all of the members of Families for Safe Streets and TA activists who have fought for years and dedicated so much of themselves to this victory. Now we need the City Council and the Mamdani administration to move forward with the strongest possible implementation.”
