Who We Are
Families for Safe Streets is spearheading a nationwide initiative that urges states to mandate the use of effective anti-speeding technology for the most dangerous, reckless drivers. These repeat offenders, known as "super speeders," pose a significant threat, and traditional penalties often fail to deter them from causing severe and potentially fatal crashes.
Statistics show that 75% of drivers with suspended licenses continue to drive, highlighting a safety gap that traditional enforcement methods have failed to address. This policy approach offers a necessary and proportionate solution to this pressing issue.

Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) is a proven vehicle safety technology that utilizes location-based data and speed limit information to prevent excessive speeding. This technology has been in use for decades. The implementation of ISA for high-risk drivers is backed by major transportation safety organizations and agencies. Safety experts unanimously agree: ISA is effective and ready for targeted application.
The Stop Super Speeders bills focus specifically on the highest-risk drivers, including those who have had their licenses suspended for:
Repeated reckless or extreme speeding violations
Street racing or dangerous driving offenses
Excessive speed-related violations

A “super speeder” is a driver who either speeds frequently or drives at extremely high speeds even occasionally—such as in drag racing or street racing. These drivers pose a serious risk to everyone on the road, contributing to preventable crashes and fatalities. Traditional penalties often fail to deter them, making targeted interventions crucial.
-
ISA technology gently controls the accelerator to keep vehicles within speed limits, helping prevent crashes and protecting everyone on the road.
-
Families for Safe Streets has helped pass ISA legislation in Virginia, Washington State, and D.C., with programs launching soon. New York City piloted ISA in municipal fleets and is expanding it to all non‑emergency vehicles. Other U.S. cities, including Ventura County (CA) and Somerville (MA), have also adopted ISA in public fleets. Internationally, Transport for London has equipped about half its bus fleet with ISA, with all new buses required to have the technology since 2019.
-
You can support ISA legislation, sign petitions, advocate with local and state governments, and encourage organizations to equip their fleets with ISA technology. Families for Safe Streets provides resources, fact sheets, and a coalition to help you get involved.
