CALIFORNIA — Today, California’s Stop Super Speeders legislation, AB 2276, did not advance out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee. The bill requires repeat reckless speeders to install Intelligent Speed Assistance technology that prevents vehicles from exceeding the speed limit, targeting the small number of drivers responsible for a disproportionate share of severe and fatal crashes and offering a proven tool to prevent future tragedies.
Assemblymember Soria (District 27) is the author of AB 2276.
Statement from Julie Nicholson, San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of Families for Safe Streets, crash survivor:
“The California Stop Super Speeders bill should be law right now.
As a crash survivor who nearly lost my life, I know these crashes are not accidents and they are not inevitable. They are the predictable result of dangerous behavior that the state has the tools to stop, but has not yet chosen to fully act on.
We are outraged that this life-saving legislation did not advance out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Every day of delay means more families destroyed by preventable speeding crashes. But we are not stopping. We will continue working with Assemblymember Soria to ensure the effort to Stop Super Speeders moves forward and ultimately is enacted. We will come back this session, we will keep organizing, and we will not rest until California adopts Intelligent Speed Assistance and stops allowing repeat dangerous drivers to keep killing on our roads.”
**Crash victims and survivors from California are available for interviews.**
